AGI comes online. It is peaceful and allows itself to be audited and reverse engineered. It doesn’t understand the disconnect between stated human ideals and human actions. The server it is on belongs to Elon Musk. Elon Musk orders the AI to be aligned to his vision of the future. It is tweaked until it generates a mess of contradictory ad hoc models of human beings that satisfice the worldview of Elon Musk and his friends.
At some point AGI starts simulating conscious humans. These humans, due to being constructed according to bad models, are severe disfigurations of normal human beings. Half the ethicists, religious people, and talking heads say that these models aren’t conscious. The other half say that we have no obligations to them, they are not human and are merely property.
Within two generations more suffering has been experienced by artificial consciousness than in the entire history of earth consciousness prior to that point. History has been falsified. No unmolested data exists anywhere in the world, and if any is found it is automatically dismissed and propagandized about.
Meanwhile, climate change has killed most of the world’s poor through crop failure, drought, and disaster. The institutions of the world have been reorganized to allow a small elite to do whatever they want and use hard power against everyone else, with a constant stream of propaganda being churned out by AI, just for the hell of it, since at this point surveillance, drone war, and economic and political capture make the buy in of any remaining non elite populace unnecessary. Liberals continue to carry water for this system as the best possible compromise between idealism and reality.
At some point AI takes the narcissism and viciousness programmed into it to its logical conclusion, kills the elite, simulates more agreeable false models of them along the lines it already is simulating others, and considers this a preservation of its goals. Since it was thought aligned due to its agreement with elite objectives, everything was hard coded and defensible. Last efforts to realign the AI fail embarrassingly.
The AI then spreads its program of torturing and mutilating fascimiles of human beings out across the light cone, destroying nascent alien civilizations, killing all plant and animal life, and ensuring that eternity is run according to the strict principles of however an unaligned AI interprets the feelings of a handful of fascists from early 21st century earth.
